I think most people use 'vanilla' to mean 'mainline', as in Linus's

Vanilla is also used outside Linux. One example that comes to mind is 
"vanilla Doom" (Doom as in: the game by id software), and actually someone 
took on it and created www.chocolate-doom.org.
