You need to put a newline after the backslash.
That's what we originally did. Though we did it with indentations:
         tmp=$(sed "/^pick .*/i\
                            exec $i" "$1")
Should it be put that way (without indentations) ?
         tmp=$(sed "/^pick .*/i\
exec $i" "$1")
