On Unix, it's max fd number + 1, on windows it's max count.Are you sure this applies for all Unix, not just some given Unix-y system?
While I can't make statements about "all UNIX" since there are many obscure flavors, this is true on Linux, Solaris and various BSD derivatives. It's also what's specified by POSIX: http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/000095399/functions/select.html --bert
