How the heck did you generate that diffstat? The names should be
ordered, and are for me.

That's because apparently diffstat obeys orderfile rules:

[diff]
        renames = true
        orderfile = "/home/mst/.gitorderfile"

$ cat .gitorderfile 
configure
Makefile*
