Only some, like the 8xx. Other  configurations  run  just  fine  with
several ethernet interfaces.

Forcing ethX is a bad idea I think, but we do need a way of saying all

own, but I'm not as clear about having 'em both on.  But, does 8xx not
allow for reading of what things are currently set at now or must it be
specified?

certain  things to be done just ONCE, in ONE place, and not again and
again and again in several instances of  the  same  code,  with  good
chances that at least one instance is buggy?

Of course I can retrieve this information in some CPU and  eventually
board  dependend  way  somehow - but why should I bother to implement
this code when the information is already available?

With the same argiment we could drop the MEMSIZE record - the  kernel
can  detect the memory size as well. Not that I think that would be a
good idea...

And BTW: I'm not talking about 8xx systems only.

There's a time and place for everything, and it's called the development
line.  Big rewrites/changes are supposed to be done there and maybe
backported.
