(esp 2.6) is a nono.  Buy a Promise card.

For it was the opposite.  I had no luck with a (PATA) Promise card, so
I replaced it with a Rocketraid 1540 a year ago.  It's been running
smoothly ever since, with both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels.
