Growing volumes

Is there some kind of doc/howto/faq on growing software raid "volumes"? I'm planning for a system that may require additional storage down the road. For example, do both RAID0 and Linear allow for growing filesystems without having to backup & restore data? Although this may not be the most reliable thing to do, if it just happens to work, then I get to go to sleep a lot earlier during maintenance windows. :) Marco
