Thanks for your (short) advice. Could you please elaborate. I was in
fact using a 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 kernel before,

I had to change from 2.6.35.8 to 2.6.37-rc4 (and now 2.6.37) for  
reliable work.
