Not an nbd expert but wouldn't it be easier use following which matches 
the + 1 in the nbd_add_socket() :-

That looks wrong.  The + 1 is just nbd_add_socket() preparing to append an entry
to the array.

Why not just check whether the pointer is NULL or not:
