I have tried to clone another repository using the command below

git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git

for the recent mainline kernel use 
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
