Please run checkpatch.pl with the -f switch/flag like shown below:

scripts/checkpatch.pl  *-f *drivers/net/can/spi/mcp251x.c

also run scripts/checkpatch.pl --help and read.

[ -f, --file  treat FILE as regular source file ]
