I used xchat's 'list of channels' search feature, and #kernelnewbies did
not appear on either of my desktops.

to follow up on this - /mode #kernelnewbies returns:

Channel #kernelnewbies modes: +ns

which means the channel is marked as 'secret'? is this intentional?
