Apologies for the confusion. I had tried the issue a couple of times
with my main repository, before reporting the error.
At first I thought it was a problem with my repository - but it turns
out it probably was a misconfiguration issue on my part.

I couldn't reproduce with both git 2.24.0 and the current development version.
