Thanks, I missed the space trimming. I think:
grep '^[^# \t]'
would be enough, though I am not sure that "\t" is portable over a raw
tab.
'grep' does not recognize "\t" on BSD or derivatives, such as Mac OS
X. (Nor does 'sed'.)
