Yes, I would say that there is one obvious 
systemic failure. 

Nowhere is it documented (as far as I am aware) that
this is the  way the git documentation should be read.

Since, in this regard, it differs from most software
documentation, it ought itself to be documented,
perhaps on the top-level git man page.
