Actually this might be a ssh/bash bug (feature?). There is different
behaviour between

  find . -maxdepth 1 -type d -a ! -name '\.*' | while read; do echo
$REPLY && ssh localhost ls /; done

and

  find . -maxdepth 1 -type d -a ! -name '\.*' | while read; do echo
$REPLY && ls /; done
