Is there something which can test whether a commit is needed?

I define "needed" as meaning when git commit -a would make a non-identical
commit.
Maybe "git diff --exit-code HEAD"?
Thanks ... "git diff --quiet || echo differences"

Cheers,
Geoff.

Jonathan
