Re: configure.ac and friends could use some love

David Syzdek offered to help or take the brunt of the work on our
autoconf corner, see e.g. this post:

but he wanted help of someone whom is familiar with the interaction
between the Makefile and configure.ac... which never materialized.

While I don't have the time to read git@ regularly and be a good maintainer
of its configure.ac and friends, I'm certainly willing to answer all autotools
related questions.  Please Cc: me on them.
