[PATCH JGIT] Computation of average could overflow

The code computes the average of two integers using either division or
signed right shift, and then uses the result as the
index of an array. If the values being averaged are very large, this can
overflow (resulting in the computation of a negative
average). Assuming that the result is intended to be nonnegative, you
can use an unsigned right shift instead. In other
words, rather that using (low+high)/2, use (low+high) >>> 1

This bug exists in many earlier implementations of binary search and
merge sort. Martin Buchholz found and fixed it
(http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6412541) in the JDK
libraries, and Joshua Bloch widely publicized
the bug pattern

Using new Integer(int) is guaranteed to always result in a new object
whereas Integer.valueOf(int) allows caching of values
to be done by the compiler, class library, or JVM. Using of cached
values avoids object allocation and the code will be faster.

Values between -128 and 127 are guaranteed to have corresponding cached
instances and using valueOf is approximately
3.5 times faster than using constructor. For values outside the constant
range the performance of both styles is the same.

Unless the class must be compatible with JVMs predating Java 1.5, use
either autoboxing or the valueOf() method when
creating instances of Long, Integer, Short, Character, and Byte.

This method ignores the return value of java.io.InputStream.skip() which
can skip multiple bytes.  If the return value is not
checked, the caller will not be able to correctly handle the case where
fewer bytes were skipped than the caller requested.
This is a particularly insidious kind of bug, because in many programs,
skips from input streams usually do skip the full amount
of data requested, causing the program to fail only sporadically. With
Buffered streams, however, skip() will only skip data
in the buffer, and will routinely fail to skip the requested number of
bytes.

Thanks, applied.  But your patch was line wrapped.  I had to unwrap
it by hand.  Please try to configure your MUA not to line wrap
patches when it sends them.  :-|

Doh.  In theory the skip should always succeed because the buffer
held the entire block we want to skip over due to the mark/reset
usage around this region.  But I agree, a skipFully() pattern is
better here.

We already have this method; see NB.skipFully().

NB also has readFully() and a few other useful functions for
dealing with common IO related patterns.

Please respin by calling NB.skipFully above rather than creating
a new package level method, and fix the line wrapping issue so we
can more easily apply it.  :-)
