This way doesn't it say you can leave out the [-b <new branch>] part
but still specify a start point? I thought the general syntax for this
would make it:

Oops, actually it is supposed to be:

 'git checkout' ... -b <new_branch> [<start_point>]

The cause where "-b <new_branch>" isn't used is covered in the line
above.
