In a perfect world, the release notes would mention the reason for the
removal (e.g. "use git foo-bar instead").

Soon after 1.5.0 was released, I think we said these two were
not used in practice and declared them as deprecated.  So there
is no "use this instead".

In a perfect world, nobody would kibitz, but instead everybody
reads, understands and remembers the discussion that led to the
change ;-)
