very eager to switch from 1.3 to 1.4 (all the othe developers are
running intel linux or nt/2000). Since last Fall I've been running
darwin/osx but it looks like Apple won't have a 1.4 release for quite
some time. Is ppc linux likely to have a working version soon?
Or even a version that works with recent mozilla builds would be sweet.
The lizard wants 1.3.1, and we only seem to have 1.3.0_PL1. Or am I
missing something?
I'd love to be able to use recent mozilla's with java.

I've got it also (on an iBook FireWire) and it works great. I just wish
that the Blackdown guys would release PPC debs of it too, instead of
just for i386.

noticeably faster on my Powerbook G3. (you can download it from IBM, just
google for it.) Problem is that the IBM jvm has been broken for me since kernel
2.4.16. 2.4.15-pre1 is the last know working kernel for me. On later kernels it
just keeps calling sched_yield() endlessly and burns System CPU time. I'd like
to fire off an email to IBM about the problem, but don't know exactly where to
fire the email off to. I use the blackdown (whose excellent work I appreciate)
release now as well.

Well, I don't run too much Java stuff, so it's been sort of a non-issue.
I'm sure a JIT for the PPC would speed things up a lot, but the lack of
it hasn't been a real issue for me, for the most part.

that it doesn't work? that would eliminate the possiblity that it's a userspace
issue (or rather some kind of kernel-userspace interaction problem)
and you're sure your trying the IBM-jdk right? could be that you have the
blackdown JDK installed as well and it comes first in your PATH or something?
just want to make sure.

Why don't you just try Debian instead? ;)
Seriously, I can't test vanilla because my filesystems are all XFS. :)
And it's not that I have too much time, if you know what I mean... I
hope you understand and that your own testing will give some results.

I do have the Blackdown 1.1 and 1.3 JDKs installed as well, but I used
the absolute path to the IBM java executable for testing. Coult it still

I just tried running it on 2.4.18-ben0, with libc6 2.2.5-1 (Debian sid),
and it starts up and seems to run just fine. I did get the binaries from
IBM's site instead of the ones from SuSE's FTP site (the latest bins on
IBM's site are about a month newer). I don't see any JIT in with their
binaries though.

I had problems with the IBM java also. It worked great the first time
through (running Limewire) but, after that it would always tell me that
it couldn't allocate the needed memory are exit right away.
So I had to switch back to blackdown. I haven't run any actual tests or
anything, but the IBM one seemed faster (probably because it is JIT
enabled), but atleast the blackdown java works.
