i highly doubt apple would have changed your machine name with a
firmware upgrade, you can find out what you machine calls itself by
checking /proc/device-tree/compatible, mine looks like so:

PowerMac1,1MacRISCPower Macintosh

only PowerMac1,1 is relevant.  note that my OpenFirmware version is
3.1.1 or something close to that.  the number in the PowerMac name is
not related to the actual firmware revision AFAIK.  

what forth script are you using?

thanks to Ben and Ethan, but this was a TOTAL brain FART on my end.

I was booting the toolbox NOT the os-chooser.

I had to set the startup disk so the firmware upgrade could happen
(tho I may not have had to do this) and when I used OS9 to make my
boot partition I forgot that it set the boot file as tbxi.

Sorry for the trouble, I guess when things just work for a long time,
you forget the details that got you there in the first place.
