I have replaced the old MPC823 on my original FADS with a new one (3H976, revision B), and everything now works fine. The kernel never hanged, no problems with bash and other SOFTWARE EMULATION bugs. Motorola posts silicon errata for a reason. It helps to carefuly read and understand just how it affects what you are doing.
