cursor color abnormalities

It seems that each time I reboot I get different cursor colors for each of
my vterms.  Is this randomness by design?  running vmode also sometimes
causes changes in color.  The problem is that 50% of the time, half my
vterms have black cursors.  The black on black contrast is, to say the
least, not inspiring.  Can anybody offer me any tips on this?
