Software RAID1 problem (bad superblock?)

From: Eric Drew Hollins <hidden>

OK, first off I have a Debian 3.0 testing box running with kernel 2.4.20.
I have RAID1 working through software. I have created a /dev/md0 device
from the /dev/hde1 and /dev/hdg1 partitions which are identically Maxtor
60GB hard drives with maxed out partitions that are connected to a Promise
UDMA133 controller.

So, I created the RAID1 device and it synced up correctly. I also
changed the partition types to 0xfd (Linux auto RAID). However, when
I reboot the computer, I get this error:

/dev/md0: THe filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 14658328
blocks. THe physical size of the device is 14658304 blocks. Either the
superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt!

I ran fsck manually and it didn't correct the problem. I have created
this device twice now and I keep getting the same errors. Does anyone
have any clue as to what is going on and how I can fix it.

BTW, I followed the Software RAID HOWTO when creating these devices if
that helps at all. THanks for the help.

Creating a filesystem on a partition and then making it part of a
mirror won't work. MD will put its superblock at the end of the
partition and shrink the space visible to the filesystem a bit.

If you are creating a new filesystem and know you are going to mirror
it later, you can specify how many blocks the filesystem should occupy
on the mkfs command line. Leave some space for the MD superblock at
the end.

Or - if you have an existing filesystem - use resize2fs to chop off a
few blocks before making the partition an MD component.

And not in stock, of course, for the simple reason Maxtor hasn't started
making the high capacity MaxLine's yet. Was supposed to be out by the end
of October according to the reply to the email I sent last year.

That, and I heard they would be 300 gb, instead of 320 gb, and even
Maxtor's website says the same. There's also a 7200 rpm version of 250 gb
coming out someday as well.

PCNation claims to have them as well, at $517, and available in 2+ weeks.
They're calling it the TomCat for some reason.

I suspect both these companies were told to expect these drives around
now, and they just haven't been told they're not ready yet.

I've been waiting for these for about 3-4 months, as I have a backup
server that needs 3 or 4 of these in raid5, that is currently up to 6 IDE
drives in it now, and can't add any more safely.

gotta have their own name to it??
( seems like dell, compaq, hp, gateway disks are running $100 more or so )
( must be super expensive to make those "labels"

guess "safely" is the key ...

i'd setup a second raid box... and start moving to the new one ???
( not work risking the current data ??
	- besides i like data to be spread out between 2 or more servers
so that if one crashes, i can recover from the others
