I'm trying to install Debian Linux with kernel 2.4.20 on a machine with an
Adaptec 2400A RAID card with 3 40Gb IDE disks attached. The machine has
no disks other than those connected to this card.
I am able to boot the system, and the RAID card is recognised (as
/dev/sda) but it cannot be accessed. I get these messages recorded by
dmesg:

I don't have your particular controller card (I've used the 2100S
before, though) or anything else particular to your system, but since no
one else has answered yet....
These messages say "cable problems" to me. It appears that you have it
configured for RAID-5, so try asking the RAID BIOS to do a complete
rebuild. This will force it to access all three disks intensely for a
while. If it passes on that, forget my diagnosis. If it yells and
screams while doing this rebuild, try using shorter cables, or step up
to Teflon-insulated high-quality ones. Make sure you're using 80-pin
cables and not 40-pin ones, too.

There have been known compatability issues with drive firmware and Adaptec
controllers. I've experienced these personally with IBM SCSI disks and a
2100S, but I'm sure it could extended to other controllers and disks. It
was listed as a known issue on the Adaptec web site for a while. Cabling
also seems like a probably cause though. I'd check that first since disk
firmware can sometimes be a headache to upgrade. Upgrading the controller
firmware is step one if you haven't already done that.

Just to note the solution to this problem for the record; it was not a
cable problem - the build went through without any errors, apart from
its taking several hours. I removed the card from the machine to get
its serial number so as to call Adaptec's support; when I put it back
in, it worked perfectly!
