multiple outputs

From: Jon Dufresne <hidden>

I have a graphics device (intel 945GM) that has multiple outputs (4 in
this case, although not all can be on at the same time). I want to use
the graphics device directly through the fb, and not through some
other layer such as X. When using the fb is it possible to tell the
graphics device to change outputs through ioctls, or ideally through
fbset?

For example I know with v4l you can enumerate ports, and then by using
an index switch through them. Does fb have an ioctl similar to this? I
couldn't find anything in the source. I'm envisioning something like

# fbset --enumerate-outputs
output 1: ANALOG
output 2: DVI
output 3: HDMI
output 4: LVDS

# fbset --get-output
output is "ANALOG"

# fbset --set-output 2
switching to "DVI" output

# fbset --get-output
output is "DVI"

# fbset --set-output 1
switching to "ANALOG" output

And then fbset could use the fb ioctls to tell the fb to switch ports,
which would tell my fb driver the same. Does this functionality exist,
in either the ioctls, or fbset?

Thanks,
Jon

The current intelfb driver does not support anything other than the
DAC at the moment anyway. Work is in progress to support modesetting
in the drm which will allow you to select outputs and crtcs.

Alex,

We also have a similar requirement for out board; can you please share your top level idea about implementation?

There is currently support for intel, amd, and nvidia chips. you can
view the git tree here:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/drm/log/?h=modesetting-gem
in addition to providing a linux framebuffer interface, you can use
the native one for more flexibility. there are some demos to use the
native interfaces here:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/drm/tree/tests?h=modesetting-gem
It's still somewhat in flux as the memory management stuff is being worked out.

Does this new design provide a fb, with the same interface, to
projects such as DirectFB. So that the user space programs will work
without change?

Thanks,
Jon

yes. It provides a legacy kernel fb interface. Although directfb has
their own set of accel code which in this case could mess with the
hardware behind the driver's back as the drm handles more than just
modesetting depending on the driver.

So, in that case, is the old, fb drivers such as intelfb, radeonfb,
etc deprecated. And the new way forward is with these drm drivers that
mimic the old fb drivers?

This still seems like it is still in development so it may not be
ready, but it is good to have an idea in my mind about where the
drivers are going.

Eventually yes, since the drm drivers will be full featured and used by X.

Yup.
