Sparse IRQ's

Hi,

   I have seen this config option on x86 as well as many other architectures.
I could not find any documentation on what this option exactly is. I
do understand
IRQ's in general context, but support of sparse_irq's is still a
little vague for me.
Could anyone here shed some light on it.
