url.<base>.insteadOf and git-clone

Nearly gone insane about this: adding a configuration like
[url "ssh://example.com/foo"]
    insteadOf = foo:

works for git-fetch and git-pull (of what I've tested), but does not on git-clone (As of version 1.5.5.GIT).

Given that this config appears on the git-clone manpage, am I to assume it's a bug?

At this point, it's a documentation bug; it's a new feature for programs 
other than clone that will eventually be supported in clone but is not 
yet. The documentation makes the currently-overly-optimistic assumption 
that clone supports all of the common stuff.
